The A-B-C Programme 2026 by the Durban African Sports Club continues to make a positive impact in schools across the community. This week’s session took place at Golden Gateway Special Needs School in Mayville, where learners enthusiastically participated in a series of fun and engaging physical activities.
Led by Coach Roy Chetty and Coach Babes Govender, the session focused on exciting exercise drills and interactive games designed to develop Agility, Balance, and Coordination (ABC)—the fundamental movement skills that form the foundation of many sports.
Learners eagerly took part in the activities, showing great excitement and determination as they worked through the drills. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, encouragement, and a renewed sense of enthusiasm from the participants.
According to Coach Babes Govender, the programme is about much more than just physical activity.
“The goal of the ABC Programme is to give young learners the opportunity to develop their basic movement skills while enjoying sport in a supportive and positive environment.”
Govender, who has spent decades mentoring young athletes, believes that early exposure to structured sport and movement is essential for healthy development.
“When children learn agility, balance, and coordination at an early age, they build confidence in themselves. Sport teaches discipline, teamwork, and life skills that stay with them long after the game ends.”
The ABC initiative forms part of the club’s broader youth development efforts, which aim to provide opportunities for children from all backgrounds to participate in sport and recreational activities. The programme also focuses on inclusivity, ensuring that learners from special needs schools can experience the benefits of physical activity in a safe and enjoyable setting.
“I have always believed that sport can change lives,” Govender added. “If we can inspire even one child to believe in their potential, then the programme has already succeeded.”
Through initiatives like the ABC Programme, the Durban African Sports Club continues to strengthen its commitment to community upliftment, youth empowerment, and the development of future generations through sport.
