On a night when Proteas stars, Olympic medallists and national champions will gather to celebrate the pinnacle of KwaZulu-Natal sport, a small community club from Durban will stand among them. Durban Africa Sports Club has been named a finalist for Recreation Body of the Year at the 11th annual KZN Sports Awards, rubbing shoulders with some of the country’s finest athletes – including Keshav Maharaj, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Zakithi Nene.
The club joins Fish Eagles Swimming Club and Made for More as nominees in its category. The prestigious ceremony takes place on 18 April at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, honouring outstanding achievements and contributions to sport across the province.
For Durban Africa Sports Club, the nomination represents a proud milestone in a journey that began in 2007 with the financial backing of SA Fasteners. From modest beginnings, the organisation has grown into a vibrant multi‑coded sports club serving communities across eThekwini.
Over the past 19 years, the club has steadily built a reputation for developing grassroots sport and promoting active lifestyles, particularly among young people. Today it is affiliated with the Chatsworth Netball Union and the eThekwini Regional League, while also serving as an associate member of the SAFA Chatsworth Local Football Association.
KZN MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mtomuhle Khawula, recently underscored the vital role of such organisations. “Excellence at the top cannot exist without a strong foundation. It all starts at the bottom, where we continue to level the playing field for everyone, regardless of race, financial status or geographical location," he said.
"The individuals we are going to recognise represent the apex. They are the product of a system that begins in communities, schools and local clubs, and rises through commitment and opportunity to excellence and podium finishes.”
His words echo the club’s own philosophy. Durban Africa Sports Club has placed special emphasis on creating opportunities for learners with special educational needs and young people living in child and youth care centres. Its dedication to sport development has not gone unnoticed; the club previously achieved Silver Status recognition from the KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and has been recognised as a finalist in past provincial sports awards.
Club president Maggie Govender said the nomination reflects the passion and dedication of everyone involved.
“We are thrilled to be nominated for the category Recreation Body of the Year. This recognition is a testament to the tireless efforts of our members who volunteer their time and skills to promote sport and recreation in eThekwini,” Govender said.
“At Durban Africa Sports Club, we’re passionate about empowering learners with special educational needs and those in child youth care centres, promoting active and healthy lifestyles that build confidence and foster inclusivity. We’re grateful for this opportunity to share our story and look forward to the awards ceremony.”
The club has also expressed gratitude to its sponsors and supporters, including SA Fasteners, Anu Ramnarain, the George Ramalu Memorial Trust, Azelis SA, Music Box and website partner TG Media.
As anticipation builds ahead of the awards ceremony, the nomination stands as a proud moment not only for the club but also for the broader Chatsworth community that continues to champion sport as a powerful tool for unity, empowerment and youth development.
