March 13, 2026 04:58 am

The Durban Africa Sports Club, in partnership with HOPE NPC, the George Ramalu Memorial Trust, and Azelis, recently hosted an engaging and impactful workshop for 36 educators from Earlington Secondary School in Phoenix.
The initiative aimed to equip teachers with practical strategies to incorporate Agility, Balance, Coordination (ABC), and other foundational movement skills into the Life Orientation curriculum, helping learners develop both physically and mentally through structured activity.
Building Skills That Go Beyond the Classroom
The workshop emphasized how movement-based learning can improve not only students’ physical development but also their confidence, focus, teamwork, and overall well-being. By integrating simple yet effective ABC exercises into regular lessons, educators can help learners develop stronger coordination and motor skills at a young age—skills that form the foundation for success in many sports and daily activities.
Experienced Leaders Guiding the Training
The session was led by Prem Vayapuri, a respected former Physical Education teacher and former Director of the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation. Drawing from years of experience in school sport development, Vayapuri shared valuable insights on how educators can implement physical literacy programs in schools even with limited resources.
Joining him was Eugene Enoch Dharmalingam, a former South African 400m athletics champion representing HOPE NPC. Dharmalingam inspired the educators by highlighting the importance of discipline, perseverance, and early exposure to physical development in shaping young athletes and confident individuals.
A Passionate Coaching Team
The workshop was facilitated by the energetic and dedicated coaching team from Durban Africa Sports Club, including:
Through hands-on demonstrations and interactive drills, the coaches showed teachers how simple activities can effectively develop agility, balance, and coordination among learners.
Strong Support from School Leadership
The initiative also received strong support from Circuit Manager Mr Sagie Moodley and Principal Mr Dean Achary, whose presence underscored the importance of collaboration between educators, sports organizations, and community partners.
A Step Forward for School Sport Development
Workshops like this highlight the growing recognition that sport and physical literacy are essential components of holistic education. By empowering teachers with practical tools and knowledge, initiatives such as the ABC programme ensure that more learners can benefit from active, engaging, and development-focused learning experiences.
The Durban Africa Sports Club and its partners continue to demonstrate how community collaboration can create meaningful opportunities for both educators and learners, helping build a stronger sporting culture within schools across the region.
