Workshop equips educators with the knowledge and leadership skills to strengthen school sport across KwaZulu-Natal
Durban Africa Sports Club (DASC) continues to strengthen grassroots sport by investing in the people who play one of the most important roles in learner development—educators.
On 23 June 2026, DASC hosted a comprehensive Sports Administration Workshop at Hotel Savera, bringing together educators from invited schools for a day of learning, collaboration and professional development. The workshop formed part of the club's ongoing commitment to building sustainable, well-managed sports programmes that create greater opportunities for young people to participate and excel.
Running from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, the programme focused on equipping educators with the practical knowledge and administrative skills needed to effectively manage school sports, strengthen governance structures and establish clear pathways for learner participation and athlete development.
The workshop opened with an insightful presentation by Prem Vayapuri, former Director of High Performance Sport and Coaching at the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation. He guided delegates through South Africa's sports development pathway, illustrating how learners progress from grassroots participation to district, provincial and national competition. He also highlighted the vital role schools play in identifying talent, nurturing potential and encouraging lifelong participation in sport.
DASC Head Coach and SASCOC-accredited professional Babes Govender delivered a session on sports governance, emphasising the importance of strong leadership and sound organisational structures. Educators explored topics including committee formation, leadership responsibilities, accountability, compliance and best practices for ensuring that school sports programmes operate efficiently and sustainably.
One of the day's practical highlights was a session presented by Maggie Govender, President of Durban Africa Sports Club and Director of KZN Netball Demarcation. She guided educators through the process of developing a sports constitution—the cornerstone of any successful sporting organisation. Participants gained practical insight into drafting constitutions that clearly define membership, office bearer responsibilities, meeting procedures, decision-making processes and organisational governance.
In addition to governance, the workshop covered a wide range of essential administrative topics, including record keeping, documentation, financial management, business principles and the effective planning and management of meetings. These skills provide educators with the tools to build organised, transparent and sustainable sports programmes within their schools.
By the end of the workshop, educators committed to implementing improved sports administration practices and developing structured programmes that will expand opportunities for learners to participate, develop their talents and reach their full potential. Reflecting on the success of the event, a DASC representative said:
"This workshop was not only about administration; it was about empowering educators with the confidence, knowledge and practical skills to create sustainable sporting environments for young people. Strong schools build strong communities, and effective sports administration is the foundation upon which successful development programmes are built."
Durban Africa Sports Club also extended its sincere appreciation to the sponsors and partners who made the workshop possible. A special word of thanks was expressed to Hotel Savera and its Director, Dhilosen Pillay, for generously providing the venue free of charge, demonstrating their shared commitment to community development through sport.
As DASC continues to expand its impact, initiatives such as the Sports Administration Workshop reinforce the club's vision of strengthening school and community sport from the ground up. By empowering educators today, the organisation is helping shape the athletes, leaders and sports administrators of tomorrow.
