DASC's ABC Programme recognised for transforming young lives through sport, inclusion and community development

The Durban Africa Sports Club (DASC) has been crowned Champions in the Innovative Programme Category at the prestigious eThekwini Sports Recognition Awards, earning recognition for its outstanding contribution to sports development and community upliftment.

The award celebrates the success of DASC's ABC Programme (Agility, Balance and Coordination), an innovative initiative designed to develop fundamental movement skills and physical literacy among young children. More than simply preparing future athletes, the programme focuses on building confident, healthy and active children by laying the foundations for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

Built around fun, inclusive and structured activities, the ABC Programme helps children develop essential skills such as agility, balance, coordination, confidence, teamwork and discipline. DASC believes that before children can excel in competitive sport, they must first develop the fundamental movement skills that support healthy growth and development.

Since its introduction, the programme has made a significant impact across the eThekwini region. It has reached 785 learners and equipped 72 educators with the knowledge and skills to promote physical literacy among Grade R to Grade 3 learners in communities including Chatsworth, Shallcross, Burlington and Phoenix.

A defining feature of the programme is its commitment to inclusion. Every child is given the opportunity to participate, regardless of ability, including learners with special educational needs. The ABC Programme was first introduced at Golden Gateway Special Needs School, where its success demonstrated the positive impact structured physical activity can have on children's confidence, development and overall well-being. From there, the initiative expanded into neighbouring schools and communities, strengthening the connection between sport, education and community development.

Beyond developing physical abilities, the programme helps children build resilience, self-belief, discipline, communication skills and a lifelong appreciation for healthy living. These qualities extend well beyond the sporting arena, equipping young people with valuable life skills that benefit them in the classroom and throughout their lives.

Reflecting on the achievement, DASC Chairperson Maggie Govender praised the dedication of everyone involved in making the programme a success.

"This award belongs to every child, coach, educator, parent and community member who believes in the power of sport. At DASC, we are not only teaching children how to move—we are helping them discover their confidence, their abilities and their potential. Our greatest reward is seeing young lives transformed and communities strengthened through sport."

The recognition is also a tribute to the countless hours of planning, coaching, mentoring and volunteer service contributed by the DASC team. Their commitment demonstrates that meaningful sports development does not depend on expensive facilities or complex structures, but on passionate people who believe in creating opportunities for others.

The club's work continues to change lives by providing children with hope, confidence and access to quality developmental programmes that strengthen both individuals and communities.

This latest honour is more than an award—it is recognition of a vision that continues to inspire young people, empower educators and unite communities through the universal language of sport.

As Durban Africa Sports Club looks to the future, it remains steadfast in its mission:

Creating Access.

Developing Potential.

Changing Lives Through Sport.

Congratulations to the entire DASC family on this well-deserved achievement. Your passion, dedication and unwavering belief in the power of sport continue to make a champion impact in the lives of countless young people and their communities.
