Reviving the Spirit of Physical Education Through ABC Skills
May 12, 2025 02:47 pm

Physical education in schools has long been a cornerstone of child development, and a recent initiative by the Durban Africa Sports Club (DASC) is rekindling that spirit in the Kharwastan community. According to Prem Vayapuri, a former Physical Education teacher and past Principal and Director in the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, DASC’s ABC Programme—focusing on Agility, Balance, and Coordination—brings back fond memories of the PE lessons led by qualified teachers in the 1970s and 1980s.

The recent session, tailored for Grade 1 to 3 learners, showcased how structured physical activities can play a crucial role in a child's development. Under the expert guidance of head coach Babes Govender, DASC coaches demonstrated their ability to teach essential technical skills such as walking, running, jumping, hopping, balancing, throwing, catching, kicking, and hitting.

More impressively, the sessions also emphasized non-technical skills—communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving—all within a playful, energetic, and recreational environment. It was a vibrant scene of fun and learning, where children were encouraged to grow not just physically, but also emotionally, cognitively, and socially.

Coach Kercy Moodley shared that the programme has been successfully piloted in four schools within the Kharwastan cluster and urged parents to seize this opportunity to get their children involved.
